Something Not Quite Right About Here (Vortex)  re-edited 1/26/2023

there is something
not quite explainable
happening
here

logic can be good
even a blessing
in a discussion
between two people with
opposing points of view

but what's happening
has little to do with logic
its as if
something is feeding
here

something's not quite right around here

at night as I write my poetry
or work on my watercolors
when the dishwasher chugs and burps
penetrate the silence
sudden things happen

laughter in a singular loop
coming through the walls
pushed through by a silent rush of cold air
a repeated refrain
which sounds inhuman

and paper sacks fly off
the top of the refrigerator
and drift down like snow
once a painting
dropped off the wall
the glass shattering

the plastic container of water
explodes in a belches of
repressed air
unexpectedly

and once when I looked outside
to see who was digging in the
dumpster
a hooded thing
which looked like a man who
had no eyes but twin black mirrors
glanced up

I am sure it was a trick of the light
but I thought his neck twisted
backwards

when I turned on the outside
balcony light
he ceased moving
and looked directly up into me
as if he could see through
I expected him to catapult himself
skyward to my  balcony

softly he alighted on his black feet
and silently padded over to
beneath my balcony
looking up at me
his head tilting side to side
in an awkward fashion
I slammed the balcony shut and
hurriedly clicked the latch
as I held my pounding chest
under my summer nightgown

one early morning during
a hot spell during some of the worst months
of the man-made pandemic
a naked homeless man pounded on
each and every parked car in the lot
screaming
he's here help me help me help me
until an ambulance and some police officers
enticed him away

crazy with the heat someone said
or crazy with the isolation

all I know is that
people have died here
by natural causes
by someone else's hand
and by their own

its the last stop
and the end of the line
for some

and I know
no I believe
I feel so much better
when I'm away
and outside
and not cloisterd in here
within
with It

and I've heard
my neighbors say the same thing

like how
they breathe a little easier
and remember to smile
and their thoughts clear
when they leave
and only when they leave

there's something
not quite right about here

and I tell it sometimes
to leave me alone...and
not to bother anyone else

some places
some spaces
simply have a mind of their own.

does help...or does it?)
